The Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder has been dubbed as the “prettiest Ferrari” ever made and has become one of the most sought after cars for over half a century.
Chris Evan’s famously owned a black version of the car and purchased the 1961 model for a then world record £5.5m back in 2008 and the price of the short wheel base speedster has continued to soar. Adding to its list of famous owners, the car had also previously been owned by actors James Coburn and Steve McQueen.
This particular example was made in 1960 and has been meticulously maintained since to ensure that it is kept it in immaculate condition and Bonhams estimated bidding to reach the £10m mark when it goes under the hammer on the 19th January.
The iconic car also famously appeared in the cult eighties film ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ but understandably a replica was used for the stunts as an original was deemed much too valuable to be used for the stunts in the 1987 film.
It’s no surprise to see the value of California’s soaring when you begin to look at what makes them so special, the combination of Pininfarina design and Scaglietti coachwork coupled with a legendary 3-litre V12 engine make it an enthusiast’s dream.
This particular car has been owned by a Brit for the past 11 years and was the 11th of only 56 short wheelbase cars ever made. This model was also used by Ferrari at the 1961 Brussels Motor Show, as well as making the cover of classic car magazine ‘Octane’.
Got £10m but don’t fancy a California, here’s a look at what else you buy with that sort of money;
- 1,999 students’ annual tuition fees
- The upkeep and maintenance of England’s cathedrals for one year
- 25,773 household electricity and water bills for one year
- Pay for the British monarchy for three months
- 322 nurses for one year
- A mortgage on Dracula’s Castle in Romania
